Ceramic

Ceramic is made out of clay which is flamed to create a tile and is generally used for wall applications, however is still manufactured and used for ceramic tile flooring. Ceramic tile is easy cleaning and requires minimal maintenance. Because ceramic is a natural product, it is unable to hold onto bacteria, odour and allergens. Two types of ceramic tile flooring is available, glazed and unglazed. Glazed ceramic has a finish applied and then flamed which creates a barrier and allows for easier cleaning and maintenance because of the non-porous surface. Unglazed ceramic doesn’t have the finish, which makes the surface porous and a little bit more difficult to clean and maintain. Porcelain

Porcelain tile is made of quartz, clay and feldspar which is pressed and heated at very high temperature, less impurities exist within the materials when compared to ceramic tile. Because it is flamed at a much higher temperature, this makes it much harder and denser then ceramic tile. Porcelain tile has a lower water absorption rate and is more durable which often makes this tile suitable for exterior and commercial applications. Comes in many different textures and finishes. Slate

Slate is sedimentary rock from the ocean floor that is heated by the earth’s core. Slate is made of clay and micas. Slate can also contain other materials such as quartz, calcite, and feldspar. Many different colours of slate exist, from light beige to black. The colour of the slate depends on the organic material that is existent in the slate. Slate is suitable for application on floors and walls but must be sealed as it is a porous material.

Limestone

Limestone is a type of marble that is very dense. This natural stone tile is a sedimentary rock from the ocean that comes in beige, grey and off-white tones. Cross cut and vein cut limestone is available, while both offer two entirely different looks. Because it is a natural stone tile, it is required that it is to be sealed to ensure that the surface is not stained.

Marble

Marble tile is one of the most popular natural stones. Marble was once limestone that went through metamorphosis from pressure and high temperatures from the earth’s core.
